    This artists' painting is the earliest known portrait of any of the Tarnow family. Paulus was a theologian at Rostock University, Rostock, Germany and, following in the path of Martin Luther, caused no small stir in the ranks of religious opinion.

    Henry Frederick Tarno enlisted in Atchison, Kansas Sept.5, 1862 seven days after Lincolns Emancipation Proclamation. On Sept. 30 his 13th Regiment, Company k, Infantry fought the battle of Newtonia. 245 of his comrades died there.Henry enlisted in Alton, Illinois in Co.E, 144th Infantry on August 23, 1864 and served the Union army until July 14, 1865. His unit spent the entire year guarding St. Louis, Missouri.
