The following entry appears in the Barnes County History published around 1953:
HERBERT LEWIS TAYLOR
Herbert Lewis Taylor was born in Dodge County, WI, on November 16, 1877; the second son of Lewis P. and Henrietta Young Taylor. In 1894, he moved with his parents to North Dakota and bought land from the Northern Pacific Railroad in Minnie Lake Township, twelve miles north of Oriska. He broke this land with a walking plow and a team of oxen.
He had two brothers: Jesse, who was a banker in Oriska; Raymond, who farmed north of Oriska; and a sister, Pearl, who married Whitfield McKay, of Grand Prairie Township. In 1904, he built the original home and in 1918, the home was enlarged and modernized with indoor plumbing and electricity using his own power plant. The building materials were hauled by horse team and wagon from Dean Smith Lumber Yard at Oriska.
In 1908, he married Mary McKay, daughter of John and Elizabeth German McKay. She was born in Baldwin Township, September 3, 1886, (formerly Goose Lake) 25 miles northeast of Valley City. Herbert and Mary worked hard to settle and improve their farmstead. Everything had to be hauled by horse and wagon from Oriska. During the winter, grain was hauled to the elevator in Oriska and a load of coal was brought back; which made a long day for man and beast.

They had five sons:
Leslie was born on July 2, 1909, and is a graduate of Valley City State College and a Masters Degree from the University of Idaho. He married Ada Stevens July 2, 1936.

John was born on November 25, 1910, and is a graduate of Valley City State College; with a Masters Degree from Columbia University in New York City and a Doctorate from Worchester, MA. In 1947, he married Virginia Haller.
Lee was born March 30, 1912, and is a graduate of North Dakota State University. He married Lola Sendoya, in 1948. A retired Army Colonel, he served in World War II in the European Theatre and in Korea during the Korean conflict.
Eldon was born February 14, 1915, and attended Valley City State College. He married Verna Bruns of Noltimier Township, August 4, 1938.
Richard C. Taylor was born November 5, 1916, and attended Valley City State College. After attending college, he bought the home farm in 1943. Hr married Marguerite J. Rasmussen of Valley City, October 25, 1947
