Notes for Sumner Barnes Kirkhoff: Sumner Barnes Kirkhoff was born in Eau Claire, WI, June 19, 1866. He married Clara Florence Smith at Eau Claire, WI. While living in Wisconsin he was a blacksmith and employed by the state as a game warden. They had four children: Warren, Sumner, Helen, and Dr. Harris. Warren married Josephine Schlagel of Fingal, ND; Sumner married Helen Herk of Fingal, ND; Helen married Alfred Rasmussen of Oriska, ND; Harris married Alma Jensen of Eau Claire, WI. They moved to a farm in Weimer Township, north of Oriska, in the spring of 1915. The farm is now owned by John Kappel. In 1920, they moved to Oriska where they operated the pool hall and later in 1920, he purchased the hotel and renamed it Hotel Wisconsin; which he operated until his death on May 8, 1933. Many of the teachers and train crews were steady borders at the hotel. During special holidays (such as Washington's birthday, St. Patrick's day, Fourth of July), they would dress in costumes pertaining to the occasion. He was mayor for several years, while mayor a park was built which is still used today. He helped plant several of the trees that still stand. He managed the baseball team and was Captain of the Fire Department. His wife died January 29, 1953 and they are both buried at Hillside Cemetery in Valley City, ND. Warren died December 24, 1972; Sumner died June 29, 1959; and Harris died July 1958. Their daughter Helen, resides in Valley, City, ND. He had eight grandchildren: Marguerite (Mrs. Richard Taylor of Valley City). Dorathea (Mrs Jerry Zinck of Valley City), Sumner Rasmussen of Fargo, ND, Jean (Mrs. George Carpenter of Jamestown, ND), Leonard (Bud) Kirkhoff of West Fargo, ND, Robert Kirkhoff also of West Fargo, ND, Michael Kirkhoff of Minneapolis, MN and Rita Kirkhoff (Stroud), deceased.
