The Tebow family name is found written in several various ways: Debow, Tebow, Thibaut, Thibout, etc. This is generally due to the fact that in history, education was not wide spread and only a few people were able to read and write in each community. Documents were written in the way the writer interpreted the name. As such, several different spelling of the same name were common in earlier years. The actual surname the family may have taken, would not have developed for some years. If known, I have indicated the family name which this individual or his/her descendants eventually took. You should remember that spelling was largely phonetic in this time period - and your ancestor may be found under a variety of names (patronymics, meaning related words) and spellings. In these early records the use of "Van" is not usually part of the surname, but is intended as "from" showing the place of origin of the individual. The earliest recorded signature shows our name as “Thybaut”. This is from Andries Thybaut who was witness to the unrecorded will of Samuel Demarest made January 28, 1695/96
