About Our Family Research

“Truly a man will not fall only because he was intimidated or forced; and only time is of the essence. I cannot even comprehend what I am supposed to record everything that I have experienced.”
It’s not over till it’s over: The race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong.

The newspaper headline read, “Jockey Beats Horse Over the Finish Line”. According to the Associated Press story, the incident occurred in Exeter, England. Jockey Tony Charlton beat the pack by 20 lengths and his horse by one length when Charlton catapulted out of the saddle and over the finish line. His horse, which had tripped, followed soon after. But the victory went to the second place finisher named slip up. A race official was quoted saying, “Tony was so far in front that only a freak accident would stop him, and that’s what happened.”

Life’s expected happening –we’ve all experienced them. The author of Ecclesiastes took note of them when he said, “The race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong.” He reflected on the fact that man is not the master of his destiny, as he so often thinks he is. Life is filled with the unpredictable-experiences and events that seem like stones dropped into the gears of human ingenuity. Strong healthy man drops dead. A rising young athlete contracts a crippling disease. A person of means suddenly loses everything in a bad deal.

What does all this say to us? It tells us not to trust our own strength, our own wisdom, or our own skill. It teaches us to depend on the Lord, who alone knows when we’re near the finish line. Our confidence should be in the One who knows the end from the beginning. Life’s race is not over till He says it’s over.

There’s so much now I cannot see,
My eyesight’s far too dim.
But come what may, I’ll simply trust
And leave it all to Him.

Living without trust in God
Is like driving in the fog.
