I am researching my family names of Ringland and Rial mainly in Australia and my husband Roy's family names of Thurston and Wood in Canada
Much of the information for the Ringland side has come from the book "The Long Travail" by Neville Gallagher (ISBN 1 86252 651 6 - published 1987). I've been able to verify most dates etc that Neville had so thoroughly researched.
I have though, come to halt in going back any further than with my gggf Captain William (Billy) Ringland (1820-1898) married to Susan Gallagher (1826-1866) in Sydney NSW Australia in 1848. Captain Billy was a Coastal Trader, owning and captaining several small schooners and ketches up and down the east coast of Australia, mainly NSW. His son William also had coastal traders and a salvage business later. Captain Billy lived out his final years at Bermagui south coast of NSW.
So far it's been hard to be able to verify where he came from although his death certificate says he was born in Workington, Cumberland England. I do have a lead to say that a William Ringland was baptised on baptised 23rd February 1820 at St Michael’s, Workington, to a William Ringland (labourer) and Mary.
Along my journey I have been lucky enough to have made contact with some of my relatives down various lines of children of Captain Billy and Susan Gallagher. It's been great to be able to pass on information between each other.
I am just starting the research on the Rial, Thurston and Wood branches of our tree.
Cheers
Roy and Sue Thurston (nee Ringland) Fremantle Western Australia
