The years surrounding the Civil War found the name Tinker in good supply around Shannon, Reynolds and Carter counties. One in particular, MARION, I have been trying to pin down, was my Great Grandfather.
Family lore has him fighting for the Union Army and mustering out from Ft. Davidson at wars end. Thus far I have been unable to confirm this.
In 1869 he married Sarah Ann Hanger and is listed in the 1880 Shannon Co. census living in Bowlan Township.
On the 31 day of July 1860 there is a Tinker family living in Kelley Township, of Carter Co. that looks very much like it could be his parents and siblings. Although there is a spelling variation.
Tinker, William 52 M Ky
Tinker, Elizabeth 47 F Ky
Tinker, Elexander 22 M In ***
Tinker, Marian 17 M Mo
Tinker, William 15 M Mo
Tinker, Thomas H 13 M Mo
Tinker, John 9 M Mo
This information matches up with the fact that he says in the 1880 census that he was born in Mo. and his Father was born in Ky.
However...my parents told my he immigrated from Ireland at age 9 with his father. Never did they say as best as I can remember, that he had siblings or that he came with his mother. This may have just been a case of omitted facts. Very confusing.
*** There is an Alexander listed in the 1880 Shannon Co. census living in Bowlan Township.
If anyone has any information that might help clear this up, I would be eternally grateful.
