• Teadosia "Tevda" Czar (152 KB)
  Teadosia "Tevda" Czar came as an orphaned 14 year old aboard "The Bremen" which she recalled as so old it was practically sinking. She ventured from a small town which sounded like "Shanok" in the Austrian Hungarian Empire; today it is the Ukraine. She is pictured aboard ship with three friends whom she had just met. "Tevda" is the shortest one.....second from the right. Soon thereafter, other friends told her that her name didn't sound American enough.......thus, she became Katherine "Katie" which lasted till she died. Several years later she married a young Samko Kowalczyk who had come to N.J. from Poland. They were my Mom's parents.

  Samko Kowalczyk was the husband of Teadosia "Tevda" Czar, also known as Katie Kowalczyk. Together they had 4 children before he died in the influenza epidemic of 1918 at the age of 31. The children were Anna, Mary, John & Michael, all born in Newark, New Jersey.
• Mary Poturaj Tofel * My husband's Mom (115 KB)
  This is Mary Poturaj at approximately age 8. She received her First Holy Communion at Saint Casimir's Church in Newark, New Jersey. She later married Walter Tofel Sr. Together they had four children....Joan, Mary, Walter Jr. and Thomas Tofel. Mary Tofel passed away in June of 1971 at age 54.
• Julia Poturaj Tonczos,Sister of Mary Poturaj Tofel (150 KB)
  Julia Poturaj and Mary Poturaj were the daughters of Grzegovz (Gregory) Poturaj from Lwow Poland, now Lviv Ukraine.....and his wife Kateryna Dziurowna of Rzesiow Poland. Grzegovz Poturaj declared his ethnic background as RUTHENIAN upon entering Ellis Island, while his wife Kateryna declared herself Polish. Besides raising their two daughters Mary and Julia......they also had a son John Poturaj, all born in Newark, New Jersey.
