Tuit Family, Western Australia, South Australia & elsewhere

Updated November 2, 2003

About Our Family Research

This branch of the Tuit family is the most isolated Tuit family in the world, living in the capital city of Perth, Western Australia. The next closest living relative is situated in Adelaide, South Australia which is on the other side of the Nullabor Plain some 2100 kilometres (1300 miles) from Perth.
The search for relatives and ancestors of the Tuits started seriously some 10 years ago, but I have been looking into the family since I met my husband over 30 years ago. There has now been a connection with the Tuits of South Australia (who are relatives of ours) and connections with many Tuits from all over the globe but these are do not appear to be related in any form or manner. Maybe much further down the track we can establish a relationship.
Jacob Tuit born 1821 in Scheveningen, Zuid Holland, Netherlands, married Johanna Maria Catharina Kruijt in 1851 in Scheveninge. They had 3 sons - Arie Johannes who ended up in Panama and married a Ecuadorian woman by the name of Dolores and they had children there - Johanna, Henri Jacob, Dolores, Clementina and Alice. James (Jacobus Marinus born 7-8 February 1854) came to South Australia 1879. Johannes Marinus born 1856 worked in shipping but anything about him is unknown. James (Jacobus Marinus) married Clementina Jemima Heritage in 1881 and had 10 children, 7 boys and 3 girls-all born in Adelaide, South Australia. He was naturalized on 26th April, 1899 at the age of 45 years and listed that he was a "a native of Antwerp" and that his occupation was "mariner". Obviously he came to Australia aboard a ship, but there are no passenger lists available to help in this area-he may have gone from Europe via America/England. This is where the search has drawn to a halt. If any Tuits or friends of the family have any information on these elusive people I would be grateful if it could be passed on to me. Then maybe one day we could have a family reunion!
