23rd February 1860.

Cupar,
Two more sudden deaths on Saturday. Captain James Tullis met his death in a very distressing manner. Deceased was out shooting and while in the nursery grounds of Messrs Laird, his fowling piece, which was probably carried carelessly, went off and the contents lodged in his breast. The body was found on a knoll in the nursery where it is supposed to have remained unnoticed for some considerable length of time, life was extinct, indeed from the nature of the wound, death must have ensued instantaneously. Captain Tullis' pipe was found beside his body and, from circumstances, it is inferred that, while trailing his gun up the hill, the trigger had come in contact with one of the young bushes. He was widely and greatly respected and has left a widow and four children to mourn his premature death.

FATAL ACCIDENT AT CUPAR FIFE. 21 February 1860.

On saturday last, between one and two o'clock, the body of captain Tullis was found in the mssrs Lairds Nursery, quite cold, with a gunshot wound to his left breast. The deceased had been out with his gun an hour or two previously; and the supposition is, from the posture of the body and the lie of the ground, rthat he had been trailing his piece like a walking stick, muzzle upwards, and that it had gone off in consequence of a missed step or some such cause. Captain Tullis was in the merchant service, has lived for some time in Cupar and has left a widow and several young children to deplore his sad fate.

We are still trawling to find more information 28/8/04.
