About Our Family Research

This is information that has been handed down to me by my grandfather Raymond William Ulmer who received it from his sister Ella (Ulmer) Cunningham.

Mathaus Ulmer, Who is my Great-Great Grandfather, was born Nov. 4, 1836 In Colonie Johannesthal So. Russia. He was a son of Zachoria Ulmer who was born in 1794 in Markgioninger Marbach Wuttenberg Germany. I have no information regarding the wife of Zachoria Ulmer. In the year 1831 Zacharia Ulmer, with his family, immigrated from Wuttenberg Germany to Colonie Johannesthal So. Russia.

Mathaus married Katherine Delzer in Johannesthal. Information about Katherine is sketchy, but she died in Johannesthal So. Russia at an early age.

There were five children from that marriage. Andrew, Catherine (Shultz), Caroline, Maria(Redmond), Jacob and Christian.

Elizabeth Klink who was born March 31, 1841 to Johann Klink and Annetta Haar who had immigrated to Colonie Johannesthal So. Russia from Wuttenburg Germany where Elizabeth was born. Elizabeth worked in Oddesa as a young girl as a house maid until she was married to Christian Ulmer, a cousin of Mathaus Ulmer's, at Johannesthal. There were three children from this marriage. Gottlieb, Wilhelm and Christian, Jr. Christian, Sr. died in Johannesthal, the date is unknown.

Elizabeth married his cousin Mauthas Ulmer in 1870 in Johannesthaul. This marriage produced six children. Fredricha (who married Adam Herboldt) and Carl were born in Russia. In 1874, when Mathaus was 37 years old and Elizabeth was 34, they immigrated to America with their children and briefly settled in Yankton So. Dakota. They later settled in Menno So. Dakota where Louise (who married Jacob Heckenliable), Lydia (who married Jack Haar), John, Emanuel and Emma (who died when she was only eight years old in Menno So. Dakota) were born.

Mathaus Ulmer died in Menno So. Dakota on January 26, 1906 at the age of 70 Years and Elizabeth died many years later in 1914 Menno, SD.

All together there were thirteen children. Their lineage (as I have pieced together) is as follows:
