I've been working on my family history for about 30 years and started with my husbands family when we married in 1985. One of the big questions I wanted answered was whether or not our families had met on the battlefield during "The War".
It ends up that they did face each other across the battlefield in Vicksburg. My 2nd great grandfather William Allmon, from Ohio, may very well have looked at the face of Joe's 3rd great grandfather Allen J. Clark, from Alabama. Allen J. Clark died in one of those skirmishes in May 1863 in Vicksburg and like many others was buried on the battlefield. This in itself is interesting, but really does show that war is hell. Allen J. Clark's family was already started when he left for war. He had a wife and 5 children left in Alabama to mourn him and to build a life without him. I'm sure it was a hard existence for them. This family survived and eventually met the Vance family from Ireland, which produced my husband, Joe Marzene Vance (1958), son of Marguerite Viola Smith and Marzene Clark Vance!
The results of my research on our families has given me many more questions to answer, but I enjoy every one of them! I'm always happy to share my information.
