Hi, I'm researching the Vance's beginning in York County, Pennsylvania. The reason why I say beginning is that there is the well-known "brick wall" preventing me from researching past this point. I first have to say that I must thank my father's cousin who had initially started the research for our Vance's, without her help I could never have done any of this.
The Vance line that I am researching begins in York County, PA and begins with Ezekial Vance. He married Elinor Curry according to the will of her father Barnabus Curry/Currey. Ezekial died somewhere in the beginning of January, 1768, acc. to his will. Elinor then petitions the Orphan's court in a couple years for James Moore and James Glasgow to take over the guardianship of her and Ezekial's children. They are listed as Ann (b. 1760), Mary (b. 1761), John (b. 1762), William (b. 1764), Elinor (b. 1766), and Ezekial Jr. (b. 1768). James Moore is supposed to have taken at least William and Ezekial, acc. to another researcher. He is reportedly to have been killed in the Revolutionary War. He does have a will though out of York County that lists his daughter Sarah, as having married William. According to Presbyterian Church Records from Adams County (they were in Menallen Township), the two were married April 20, 1785. They apparently lived there in Menallen Township in 1790, acc. to Fed. Census. By 1800, they are found in Fayette County, Menallen Township. Fayette County's records are limited and I only found William's will with his death being around 1804. He lists his children as James, William, and Jane and their dates are 1787, 1792, and 1795 respectively. James' line are my relations. I have more info though on his brother and sister than him so if anyone is willing to help out :) . William apparently was a veteran of the War of 1812 acc. to his pension file. He said that he was in Ft. Meigs when the British attacked during the day of "Dudley's Defeat." I found this info out by getting a lookup in Monroe Co. Ohio Families History(p. 298). It has a good listing of the families that were to follow. He lived in Monroe County for about 30 years and then moved to Belmont County next to some relatives in 1870 before his death on June 21, 1877. He is buried in the Old Malaga Cemetery in Monroe County. His children lived mainly in Elk Township, Noble County. Jane Vance married into the William Grier family. I believe that they may have met in Fayette County as there are Griers listed in that county. William Grier's father, Henry, was a Presbyterian minister. They lived in Millwood Township (first Oxford), Guernsey County also for a number of years. They lived pretty close to James Vance's family there in Guernsey County. The only thing that I have found so far is an administration record dated in 1833, making Ezekial Jr., his uncle, the adminstrator of his estate. (By the way, Ezekial dies in 1846, acc. to another adm. paper and he had been involved in the formation of some of the roads in Guernsey Co.). There is also listing of James' land having been poss. in the process of being bought and being divided by the heirs when he died. These are the children of James' Vance as researched by my father's cousin: Jane (b. 1810), William (b. 1810), Mary (b. 1811), John (b. 1812), James (b. 1816), Thomas (b. 1818), Sarah (b. 1820). James had married an Abigail whose maiden name is a mystery but she was from Virginia. She lives a long time to just past 1870. Jane Vance married David Spears January 18, 1831 in Guernsey Co., OH. They move for a little while to Coshocton County and then I lost them. William married Catherine Newell Knox Feb. 12, 1843 in Holmes Co., OH. On 1850 Fed. Census in Adams Township. Mary Vance married William Henderson Jr. April 19, 1832. They have 10 children. The Henderson's are listed on the earliest federal censuses and descendants remain throughout the century.
