Veater Family History of England, Wales and U.S.A.

Updated November 9, 2000

About Our Family Research

I am researching the Veater/Vater Family that originated in England and Wales, many of whom include my direct ancestors, immigrated to the United States. My research efforts started more than 50 years ago. In 1990, I complied this information into a history of the Veater Family 1787-1990.

My earliest direct ancestor is Thomas Veater born in 1787 at Blaina, Monmouth, Wales, son of Thomas Veater and mother Mary. Thomas married Mary Parfitt on October 3, 1814. Two sons were born of Thomas and Mary: (1) James Parfitt Veater and (2) Thomas Veater born in 1820 in Farmborough, Somerset, England.

James Parfitt Veater married Dinah Frances Baber, February 15, 1841 at Llanelly Parish Church, Brecon, Wales. Dinah was born November 5, 1823 in Broadfield Wrington (Redhill), Somerset, England of James Baber and Elizabeth Cleaves. James Parfitt Veater and Dinah Frances Baber had six children: (1) A son who died at birth on November 11, 1842, (2) Susannah Veater born December 23, 1843 in Bedminister, Somerset, England, (3) James Veater, born July 19, 1846 in Bedminister, Somerset, (4) Mercy Veater born April 21, 1848 in Blaina, Monmouth, Wales, (5) Elizabeth Veater born December 21, 1850 in Aberystruth, Monmouth, Wales and (6) Thomas Veater born October 8, 1852 in Cwmcelyn, Monmouth, Wales.

I have found in many of the British records the spelling of the Veater family name as "Vater". It appears in the early days of the Census that the takers would write the name the way it sounded to them and so we find both the spelling of Veater and also Vater in the same Census records of families in living in the the same village. Thus in some of the records, a son may be listed as "Veater" and the father is listed as "Vater". It is interesting to note that the Veater family members now living in southern Utah (many of whose ancestors including my own, who immigrated from the Veater Families of England and Wales) still pronounce the "Veater" name as "Vater".

I would enjoy the opportunity to share information with others searching the Veater/Vater Family Tree.
