I was raised by my maternal grandparents: Marciala Guevara Fontanez and Lazaro Rivera Peña. Turns out mostly everyone in Barrio Boquerón, Las Piedras, PR is in one way or another related to each other (yes, small island, lots of crossbreeding). I started doing research into my family history after watching Roots. I didn't (and to a point still don't) know much about my father's family, except that I have met my siblings, some cousins, some aunts, my paternal grandmother and 1 of my paternal great-grandmother.
My mother, Sara Rivera Guevara, recently died in February 2000, and my maternal grandmother, Marciala Guevara (or as I called her: mami-abuela) died in December 2004. As her first grandchild, I've always had (or took) the responsability of looking out for the family (mainly cousins, the older one's should take care of themselves, LOL) and therefore, it falls on me to know who's who, and how they are family. Thank GOD I have a computer to help because now we have family all over the world (US, El Salvador, Europe, New Zeland just to name a few).
