About Our Family Research

Welcome to the Home Page of the BATE Family. The family originates from the island of Cebu in the Philippines. Sabino Bate, his wife, Honorata (Gabaylo), and 2 of their 4 children immigrated to Hawaii sometime at the end of 1923 and early 1924 to work on a sugar cane plantation in Hawaii. As was a common occurence during the time, the family name was changed several times and in the end the family's name became BATIS. Subsequently, they settled into the McBryde Sugar Plantation in the southern part of the island of Kaua`i. They had 8 more children. This is a record of their story, which now includes family members scattered across the United States mainland . . . and most recently their Philippine family members and their descendants.
