We are trying to trace our family's history before 1805. We know that our ancestor, Christian Hesseman, came to the United States around or about 1825 - 1835 as a stow away on a ship from Prussia. We have no information about his parents or the origins of his wife, Margaret Lyman. She either came from Virginia or Pittsburg, PA.
Our family's surname has changed over time. When Christian arrived in America, his name was spelled with an "e" in the middle. That is the spelling on his gravestone. Currently, the "e" has been dropped and it is simply "Hessman."
Each year on the last Sunday in June, we hold a reunion in Edgington, IL for the descendants of Lewis Hesseman. Lewis is the son of Christian Hesseman.
Our family would appreciate any information about the history of any Hessmans (Hessemans) in the U.S. Who knows, maybe our ancestors came from the same country, village, or family!
