EARLIER IMMIGATION HISTORY:

The Parliament of England established Penal Laws, which were directed against the Roman Catholics of Ireland, in 1665 and 1680. The result, was a large percentage of the population immigrated, the Roman Catholics to Spain and France, and the Protestants to America.

From 1845 - 1847 rent-racked Ireland suffered a disastrous famine resulting from the failure of the potato crop. Again, a large number of people immigrated, especially to America. Through immigration and deaths resulting from famine, by 1848 the population decreased by more than two million people. [Rsc. Funk & Wagnalls Encycl., Vol. 17, pg. 214].

SPAIN

Roman Catholicism is processed by 97% of the Spaniards.

In the War of the Polish Succession, 1733 - 1735, Spain joined France against Austria, and gained the Two Sicilies, by the Treaty of Vienna.
In the War of the Australian Succession, 1740 - 1748, a Franco -Spanish alliance again fought Austria, and by the treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle the Spanish Bourbons gained control of Gustalla, Piacenza, and Parma in Italy.

In 1762, Spain entered the Seven Years' War as a French ally. As the result of the British victory, Spanish Florida became British, but France ceded Louisiana to Spain as reparation. The two countries again joined against Great Britain in 1779, aiding the American Revolution, and Spain reprocessed Florida by the Treaty of Versailles in 1783.

Charles III was the greatest Bourbon King. His son, and sucessor, Charles IV, was a weak ruler, prey to the intrigues and corruption that characterized the Spanish Court, the beginning of the French Revolution in 1789 was a fatal blow to the Spanish to attempt to revive Spain as a great European state through French aid against Great Britain. Fundamentally opposed to the Revolution and its attack on monarchy, and a blood relation of the French Bourbon dynasty, the Spanish king allied himself with Great Britain and in 1783 declared war on the revolutionary government of France. By 1794 the French army was invading Spain, forcing a Spanish admission of defeat. By the Treaty of Basel in 1795 Spain was committed to alliance with France.
