The Walsh family from Ireland to Antigonish, Nova Scotia

Updated April 8, 2002

About Our Family Research

This is the record of the Thomas Walsh - Mary Purcell family, originally from Nenagh, County Tipperary, Ireland, through their emigration to Newfoundland and then to Antigonish, Nova Scotia and to the United States. They left Ireland in 1827 with their three-year-old son Martin and Tom's brother Andrew, and arrived in Antigonish in 1828 after spending some time in Newfoundland because of illness.

The descendants of Martin Walsh and his wife, Mary Hanrahan, are available to us, but there are no easy trails to Andrew Walsh, who moved to the United States, probably around 1828 or 1829. Any help in this area would be appreciated.

The Walsh family have many relatives in the Boston area, and these direct descendants of Martin Walsh are known to us. James Walsh (a grandson of Martin Walsh) of Antigonish, Nova Scotia has written an account of the Walsh family in his unpublished book, From Erin's Shore (March 24, 1989).
