About Our Family Research

Benjamin J. Warren(b: Virginia 9/15/1869 d:9/12/1853) married May 4th, 1791 a Rachel Culbertson (b:Caswell County,NC 1770 d:10/10/1861).According to the 1840 census Benjamin Warren was a close neighbor of John Culbertson.. It is beleived that Benjamin married one of John's daughters according to the census John would have had a daughter of marrying age...Their son James S. Warren(b:1797 N.Carolina) (a Blacksmith) married(4/2/1821) a Elizabeth Haddleston(b:1809 in Va.)(or Huddleston??)..
James & Elizabeth had a girl, Rachel(probably named after his mother, a son Robert S. a daughter named Elizabeth(probably named after her mom) and a son named James A...one of their sons was my great grandfather>> Robert S. Warren(1821-1896 S.C.)...He was a Blacksmith by trade as was his father James S. Warren. Robert was also 2nd Lt. for the Confederate Army during the Civil War. In 1860 Robert & family were living in Mecklenburg,NC., he joined the 13th N.C. Regiment(Mecklenberg cty,NC)from 1861-62.He was a member of the "Ranalsburg Riflemen." Later he served in the 5th & 6th "SC Reserves" for the remainder of the war.
The "S" in his name, from all indications was "Smith".He also was a "Blacksmith" by trade. He is buried @ Flint Hill Baptist Church Cemetery,Ft.Mill,SC..(NOTE:the name Smith could be from being a Blacksmith...they were known as "smithy's)
He married(abt:1846-47) Catherine May Merrit (father:William Merrit(1800-1868) & mother:Sarah Jane Graham(1803-????). Very little is known of Sarah at this time but all lived in York cty,SC (ft.mill area). Apparently the Warrens of those days were not very keen on the US government (yankees) knowing much about them. They were listed in some of the census'after the civil war as being of some wealth.Owning the land that the Theme park "Carowinds" in NC is now on. A cousin of my grandfather sold the land to the company that built Carowinds. However very little else is known about them.
My grandfather was Robert Lee Warren I have heard his entire name was Robert Edward Lee Warren (8/1873-12/1963)There was also two sisters..one was Martha she was much older than Robert Lee and the other sister born 1871 was named "Lettie"
I never asked him if his entire name was Robert Edward Lee Warren though he lived til I was of age and in the military at time of his death. However my brother and I lived with them for a number of years. My brother was told it was so and if anyone would know it would be him.
Robert Lee Warren married "Carrie Price Comer"(3/27/1887-6/10/1968) in 1908. She was daughter of Edward Washington Comer(1856-1924)& Amanda Ella Bates(1861-1921..Robert & Carrie Warren are burried at Union Memorial Gardens in Union,SC. Naturally he was named after Robt. E. Lee. My grandfather& GrMother had 5 son's.(Edward Grier Warren,Robert Bates Warren,Curtis Lee Warren...Neal Comer Warren & Maurice Young Warren). Robert Lee & Carrie's family lived in mostly, York county,SC and Lockhart,SC in Union county.
All the brothers except Maurice were born in York Cty, SC. Maurice(the youngest) was born in Lockhart,Union,SC.This is where I spent much of my childhood and teen years..
MY FATHER, was the 2nd son of Robt. & Carrie,(Robert Bates Warren b:8/4/1911-11/8/1974.) He was an electrician by trade.Like most fathers, he was a wonderful man! He is buried @ Greenlawn Memorial Gardens,Columbia,SC. My father married Pauline Norris in Dec. 1937. They have 4 children..two sister Norma(b:1939) Rebecca(b:1941) Myself-Ronald(b:1943) and my brother Jerry(b:1944)
The below are my Maternal ancestors and were "true mountain" people to the fullest.
My Maternal grandfather was William Howard Norris(1893-1976 burial in Lex.KY.)
He was a business man and owned several furniture & appliance stores in N.C. and Ohio.
His father was William Ambrose Norris of NC..Most of this family was from Wautuga & Madison counties, NC.
