We the undersigned being Sons of Pilots resident at South Shields, under the age of 21 years and at present qualifying ourselves to be Pilots against we attain the age in which you require before we can have Branches, having been protected since the War commenced by protections signed by the Mayor, and Aldermen of Newcastle, but at present the Mayor, and Aldermen, not having a power to grant us similar protection as we were informed on our last application on Thursday April 6th 1797, leaves us to be apprehensive in of being Imprest and prevents us going as usual in the Cobles to gain experience and Instructions; we beg leave to state our situation, to you Gentlemen, hoping you will give us such power to Act as will enable us to qualify ourselves to be Pilots, and to prevent us being molested by any of the Officers of the Impress: Begging you will take into your serious considerations what is above set forth and your Petitioners will ever pray. John Shotton, Ralph Shotton, George Tinmouth, John Young, James Douglas, Samuel Houlsby, William Purvis, John Purvis, William Marshall, Ralph Brown? Thomas Chambers, Patrick Tindale, Richard Houlsby, John Coates. Honourable Gentlemen the above is a true state in which they are situate and we cannot get our Cobles managed without them.
