William M. Colvin (son of Joseph Colvin, Jr. and Nancy Turner) was born August 06, 1826 in Lincoln County, Kentucky, and died August 21, 1909 in Sandusky, Iowa. He married Catherine Ann Vanersdall on August 10, 1847.

William owned a small farm in Kentucky, but sold it after his marriage to Catherine. He left Kentucky because he opposed slavery. After the Civil War, several black families, who had previously known William, came to Iowa because they knew that William would help them get situated. Some members of these black families are buried in the small Colvin Cemetery on William's farm in Lee County, Iowa.
