OBITUARY
Died of old age, on his farm near New Winchester, Indiana, Mr. William Blacketer. The deceased was born in Mecklingburg County, Virginia February 19, 1795. When he was 12 years old he came to Kentucky; he remained there until 1814, when he enlisted in the army as a private in the War of 1812. After the war closed, on January 27, 1820, he was married to Miss Elizabeth Clanch. In the year 1824, they moved Putnam Cty, Indiana, and settled near the Public Spring in Greencastle; borrowed a few boards of a man by the name of Kindle, and made a shelter by the side of a big log, this being their shelter until he built a house, which was the fourth on built in Greencastle. He and his family moved in and lived lived there until he moved three miles east of Greencastle and took a lease and remained there until the year 1830, when he sold his lease for two-thirds what his 240 acre farm cost him in Hendricks Cty. He lived on this farm until the year 1865 when he sold it for $10,000 and moved to Missouri where he bought a farm of 500 acres; he lived on this farm until 1870, when he became dissatisfied, sold the farm and returned to Hendricks Cty., Indiana. He purchased 160 acres of his old farm and remained on it, a good neighbor, until he died. He was followed by many relatives and kind friends to the New Winchester Cemetery where he was peacefully laid away. He leaves 4 children to mourn. He became a member of the New Winchester Christian Church in the year 1838 under the preaching of a man by the name of George Piercy. We have reason to believe he lived and died a christian, a loving husband, kind father and a generous neighbor. If he had lived until the 19th day of next month he would have been 92 years old. He never had a quarrel, never sued anyone, and never was sued, never paid a $10 doctor bill in his life, drank coffee and chewed tobacco for 70 years and teeth sufficient to masticate his food well. His wife died on April 20 last, in her 86th year. Mr Blacketer cleared 160 acres of land; he was the oldest man in this part of the country. A FRIEND
