James Allen Stewart was born October 19, 1819 in Kentucky. His parents were George Stewart and Delphia Pierce Stewart. They were married in Spotsylvania, VA August 26, 1808. Shortly after 1810 (Census) George packed up his family and moved to Mercer County, Kentucky where we find them on the 1820 Mercer County Census. George must have died before 1832 because we find Delphia consenting to a daughter's marriage at that time. I believe George would have done that had he been alive. Delphia was born August 1786 in Baltimore, MD and died January 2, 1864 in Mercer County, KY. Her father may have been John Pierce as John is the only other Pierce in Spotsylvania at that time. Delphia is buried at Carpenter's Cemetery in Mercer County.
James Allen Stewart married Emaline Hargrove January 10, 1842 in Mercer County. She was the daughter of Zachariah. She was born July 10, 1821 in Boyle County, KY and died January 3, 1864, the day after Delphia died. So Allen lost his mother one day and his wife the next. Allen was left with several children. The youngest was Emaline who was only a week old. Sarah Amanda was about 2, Jordan 6, Martha 9, Richard 11, Woodson 15, Mary 20 and married, and Nancy 21.
The Allen Stewart home was a gathering place for neighbors to hear Dr. J. J. Polk of Perryville preach. Dr. Polk practiced medicine in Perryville, but he traveled the countryside along the Chaplin and Rolling Fork Rivers as a Methodist circuit rider. He would spend the night with the Stewarts. On January 4, 1858 Allen and Emaline gave land for a church to be built at Stewart. A frame church was erected across the road from Allen's house and dedicated as the Antioch Church. The building was to be used by the following churches: Methodist Episcopal, Regular Baptist, Reformed Baptist, and Cumberland Presbyterian meeting at different times. Each group became stronger and moved to different places. The land was then sold at Harrodsburg, KY at the courthouse. Allen bought it back May 28, 1878 and re-deeded it to the trustees of the Methodist Church, to revert back to J. A. Stewart's heirs if it ceases to be used for a place of worship (Deed book #2, page 47, Mercer County; also Book #46, page 322).
Dr. Cecil C. Carpenter, a great grandson of the Stewarts, spoke at the dedication of a memorial marker for Allen and Emaline in August of 1978 at Antioch Church. Dr. Carpenter said that the pioneer Stewart lived most of his life in the community of Stewart and that he owned much land in the area where he raised his children. He also owned animals, crude machinery, mules, jacks, including special breeding jacks, and slaves. He had a store and was the postmaster at Stewart. Dr. Carpenter also said he suspected that Stewart lost much of his wealth when the Union Army invaded the area during the Civil War. "The soldiers came from the west, shot his animals, and looted Stewarts' residence and barns," he explained. He went on to say that Allen was not a member of the military service but did serve in the militia. He was a Democrat and had a limited education.
Dr. Carpenter continued saying that Stewart was thought highly of by his neighbors, had great courage, was religious, and probably thought of himself as better than most people. He frowned more than he smiled, had no sense of humor and would not have approved of the memorial marker. He also pointed out that Stewart did not want a cemetery on the church property (but there is one). He wanted the space used for more parking and expansion of the church. (The material from Dr. Carpenter comes from the Danville Advocate-Messenger, May 30,1978.)
There are two memorial markers at Antioch Church. One of them says the following: This marker honors JAMES ALLEN STEWART and his wife EMALINE STEWART for their generous and loving gift of land on May 28, 1878 to the trustees of Antioch Methodist Church, Mercer County, Kentucky, to be used as a place of Christian worship. Presented by the Stewart Descendants and dedicated this May 28, 1978.
The other marker lists the children of JAMES ALLEN STEWART 1819 - 1896 and his wife EMALINE HARGROVE STEWART 1821 - 1864: Nancy J 1842-1917; Mary A. 1844-1905; William Woodson 1848-1927; James T. 1850-1868; John Richard 1853-1944; Martha 1855-1937; Jordan T. 1858-1926; Sarah Amanda 1861-1939; and Emaline 1863-1885. (Note: There was another son, George W. Stewart born April 30, 1846 and died August 6, 1850 who is not listed. He is buried at Carpenter's Cemetery.) -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
