About Our Family Research

My Irish immigrant great-grandfather, Robert Gavagan, was born in County Roscommon in 1830, and died in Boston, MA, in 1899. Robert was fifteen years old when he survived a harrowing journey to Grosse Ile, Canada, in 1847, and then made his way to Boston, MA, where he lived out his life, married, raised 9 children, and died in 1899. After several unsuccessful years of looking in Ireland for Robert's and my Irish ancestors, I finally learned that the Gavagan name in Boyle, County Roscommon, Ireland, was spelled GAVICAN, GAVIKAN, GAVAGHAN, as well as a number of other spelling variations. Once armed with this information, I was able to find my Gavagan roots.
