William Clark Vance

11 July, 1850 - 16 December, 1928

William Clark Vance, the father of Nancy Jane Vance, was one of nine children. He was
born in Randolph, Indiana; the first three children in this family were also born there, but
the remaining siblings were born in Wisconsin, the home of this family for many years.

The father of this William Clark Vance was named William W. Vance and is reported as
being born in [possibly Ohio but probably in] Pennsylvania; he may have descended from
Pennsylvania Dutch ancestry. One family story had William born in Germany, but records
found by the Jensens contradict this.[2] Neither of these reports have been confirmed.

The mother of William Clark Vance was Margaret Wallace, reported to be of Scotch-Irish
heritage; she was born in and married to William W. Vance in Randolph, Indiana.
Margaret was one of eleven children.

William's siblings were named: (per memory of Marie Wein and supplemented/corrected
by Carolyn Jensen inputs)[2]

William Clark Vance married Sarah Elizabeth McKinney on 31 Dec., 1871, in Richwood,
Richland Cty., Wisconsin. Her father, Burrell McKinney (1814-abt 1882) reportedly was
born in North Carolina [2]. He was moved to Springfield, IL and later lived in WI for
some time and is buried in
Richland County, WI..

* Mary Olive had a 2nd marriage to Jules Hovelsrud
** Charles died at this young age (as reported by "family stories") as a result of being
struck by a train while walking along the railroad track. At that particular time, his
mother was quite ill and he had decided to go home for a visit.
** Clifford Vance believes that the oldest child of William Clark Vance and Sarah
McKinney Vance was named Washington and that he died young as a result of a railroad
accident; it would appear that there may be confusion between the oldest and younger
child, in this recollection.

William Clark and Sarah McKinney Vance moved from WI to Iowa c1883 [per Dale &
Chancie Vance memory] They made this move in a covered wagon, having a team of
horses, a cow, and six older children. They lived on a farm in Floyd, then Niles, and also
south of Charles City, IA when they first came to IA.

Descendant Dale Vance of Floyd, IA. advises that William played the fiddle and enjoyed
playing at local dances.

In addition to the locales shown above, William and Sarah Vance also lived in SD from
1902 to 1904 [homesteading, per Doris Baker]. After that residence, they chose to return
to IA to live on a farm north of Floyd and later go into the town of Floyd in 1920.

Both William and Sarah are buried at Oakwood Cemetery, Floyd, IA.
