Catherine Brady (b. 30 March 1832, d. 04 February 1920)
Catherine Brady (daughter of Owen Brady) was born 30 March 1832 in County Cavan, Ireland-death cert. states birth date of March, 1838, and died 04 February 1920 in Minneapolis, Hennipin, MN.
Little is known about the specific background or origin of Catherine Brady who became the wife of Abial Vandaworker around 1854. As recorded below, her birth year is not exactly known either, depending on the source used.
While she was born in Ireland, it is apparent she emigrated to the USA and then to Illinois. It is believed that her marriage took place in IL, probably in or near Lake County, IL.
"My mother was four years old when they came to America. I know not what year. This Aunt [Ann] never had any children of her own. .... Aunt Ann came to borrow one of my mother's [children], always taking one home with her as she came to visit us--so they say--and Charley was a great favorite of hers and stayed with her a lot more then any of the others did, especially each school vacation." [4] p2 *
Reference to a sister and their parents, is made in [4]. These people were very helpful to the Abial Vandaworker family, especially son Charles and his family. Catherine's parents had permanent cemetery plots in the Roman Catholic Cemetery near Waconda, IL, in which son-in-law Charles is buried.
"My mother [Catherine] had one sister Ann and one brother John; I never saw him." [4] p2
This death certificate for Catherine Brady Vandaworker displays: [1]
-She died at 1815 Bryant Ave., Mpls, MN, where she had lived for 35 years.
-She was born in Ireland, County Cavan and had been in the US since she was about four years old [4]
-Her death was attributed to arthritis deformans. She had been treated by Dr. G W Bass since 1 Jan., 1918.
-While her parents Owen and Catherine (Conway) Brady are listed, their specific birthplace in Ireland was not known.
-Her occupation is listed as housewife, having been retired for 12 years.
5-1-1 208230 -She was buried in St. Marys Cemetery, Minneapolis, MN by Knaeble (?) and Scherer on 7 Feb., 1920" [1]
-That she had lived in the USA for a period of 35 years, after immigration [believed to be an error by the son George, with this "fact" confused with length of time living at this address].
Catherine was married to Abial Vandaworker about 1854; their first child, Julia was born in 1860 and a son Charles was born in 1865. No specific marriage date for this couple was found.
Children issued from this marriage have been presented/discussed under spouse Abial's biography.
Catherine Brady Vandaworker originated or came into possession of a Family Bible, which was subsequently passed on to her son Cyrus; after his death, the Bible was given to Sue by her parents and she has kept it ever since. It is "not in good condition and should be restored" but the entries are [mostly] legible in spite of being in script writing. This is a key document in correlating family continuity from the original immigrants, as described in [3] which went far back in history, with the "modern day" data which was previously gathered. [2]
From this source, many previously unknown names and dates have been obtained; as best can be told, most of them are in agreement with previously recorded thereby making this a valuable find. Interestingly, the existence and ownership of this Bible had been recorded many years ago, via information given by the Earl Vanderworker family, even though the name of the owner [in California] was unknown.
Please refer to comments under Charles Vanda [son of Catherine and Abial], with respect to his death and burial in the Brady family plot in Transfiguration Cemetery, Wauconda, IL. The Brady family was very helpful to Charles Vanda and his wife, when he was deathly ill and in Arizona as well as after his death.
* As may happen, dates/elapsed times do not correlate perfectly. If Catherine emigrated at age four [giving us a date of about 1836-1842], this does not agree with an immigration date provided by another [non-verified] source of 1802 for Catherine’s parents who would then be at an age of four and six. [5] This type comparative statistic tends to confuse the integrity of data data collected.

** As may be noted, the Family Bible [2] originated with Catherine Brady and was subsequently passed on to her son. It is in this reference that her birth date is entered as being 30 March, 1832; it would be logical to assume she may have made that entry. If so, we might then need to assume that son George who signed the Death Certificate was not correct in his data submission of her death being at the age of "81 years and 11 months and ? days". ** Contradicting the above logic, both the 1870 and 1880 Census for Lake County, IL, Town of Ela, Vol. 30 p585 and Vol. 31 p24 list the Abial Vanda family; in both cases, Kate/Catherine is shown as having the same birth year as husband Abial. [1836-37, depending on when the Census was taken--she is shown to be age 33 and 43 in these Census recordings].
**The birth date of Catherine is of interest when correlated with the birth dates of the children to this family. These dates spanned the period of mid 1860 to late 1880; a birth year of 1832 for Catherine would mean the last child was born to her at the age of 48 while a birth year of 1838 would create a birth of the last child at the age of 42.
