Mr. Thomas Lillard [1795- c1845- see below) was born in North Carolina but moved westerly and died in Missouri about 1845 but this date is not confirmed. [8] Information learned about this family and its background is written below.
Thomas Lillard would be the great great grandfather of Marie Vanda Wein; his daughter Nancy married a Burell (Burril/Burrell) McKinney in IL in 1841, indicating the migration characteristic of the family; this migratory trend is complemented by the fact that Nancy Lillard McKinney died and was buried in Floyd, IA in 1897. Other Lillards lived and died in Sangamon Co (Springfield area), IL and NW Missouri.
Thomas was the second child of Moses Lillard and Ellander Molly Field.
Census information states: [2] -Thomas Lillard was born by 1795. -Thomas' father Moses' youngest son had to be born by 1790. -Thomas is the youngest son of Moses, Sr. [4] This indicates that there is a discrepancy in the census information recorded, with respect to possible birth dates.
Attempts to learn more of this family, via census records, were not successful.
Given names appear often in the history of the Lillard family, as was the custom then; for example, Thomas is the name of the first Lillard (LOLLARD) known, in the mid 15th century era, when he was in the Army of King Henry V and knighted as Sir Thomas after the battle of Agincourt. [4] Thomas appears in other Lillard families.
Siblings of Thomas Lillard, and other children of Moses Lillard, Sr. are: [3]
a] -Morgan b] -John (Jack) c] -Joshua [from various census records, it estimated that birth dates d] -James for these children were 1770 to 1795.] e] -Moses, Jr. f] -THOMAS g] -Milly h] -Elizabeth i] -probably another daughter
[refer to Moses Lillard, for more parental/family information]
Thomas Lillard married Temperance Duncan (b Abt. 1797-d ?) who also apparently was born in the Rockingham Co., NC area, since that is the location of their marriage on 6 Oct., 1814.
An 1876 "Early Settlers of Sangamon County, IL" confirms that:
"Thomas Lillard was born in North Carolina, married there to Temperance Duncan. They moved to Tennessee with her father, and from there to Sangamon County, Ill., arriving in 1830 in what is now Woodside Township. Mrs. Lillard died, and he married again and moved to Missouri, taking all except two of his children." [Martha and Nancy, both of whom were married.] [6]
With respect to the family origins, the 1810 census reviewed (LDS AIS) shows no Lillards in Richmond Co., NC.
However this family does appear in the 1820 census with a Thomas Lillard of Rockingham County (not town), NC, as the head of a household. This is the county where father Moses is found in the census, as well as other members of the Lillard family.
An 1830 IL Census also lists this family, thereby allowing us to determine names and birth dates of the children. Issues of the Thomas' and Temperance Lillard family consisted of:
[A] - in 1820 of North Carolina census -one male under age 10 -one male age 16-25 (b. no later than 1795) -one female under age 10 - one female age 16-25 (b. no later than 1795) -one person in the household was engaged in agriculture; -there were no slaves in this household. [Names are not provided]
[B] - in 1830 census the Illinois census has the Thomas Lillard family consisting of: -one male under age 5 -one female age 5/10-Nancy was b. 1822 [5] -one male age 5/10 -one female age 10/15 - Martha was b 24Jul,1815 [6] -one male age 10/15 [names of these boys are not provided]
Confirmed birth date of daughters are: Martha- 24 July, 1815 [6]; Nancy- 9 Nov., 1822 [5].
Therefor putting together information derived from sources, the 1830 Thomas Lillard family consisted of: -Martha- b 1815 in NC - died sometime after 1876 [6] -unknown boy-b. about 1818 in NC -Nancy- b. 1822 in NC - d. 1897 -unknown boy-b. about 1824 -unknown boy- b. about 1827 in NC or TN or IL
Identities of the boys in this family were not found.
The 1840 Census listed no Lillard names. [2]
The 1850 census does not list Thomas in MO or IL; based on these records, it is assumed that he had moved or died in the era of 1845.
Mother Temperance Lillard died in Sangamon County, IL [at an unknown date].
Thomas Lillard married again and moved to Missouri, "taking all except two of his children" [Martha and Nancy, both of whom were married at that time, presumably in Illinois]. [6] Reference [7] lists a Thomas Lillard marrying an Elizabeth Jones 4 Oct., 1833, in Sangamon County, IL..
Area maps show us that Sangamon Cty. is in central IL and later census records show many Lillards were living in that part of IL and in adjacent MO counties, continuing the "migrations".
Viewing the overall geography, Sangamon Co., IL is in central part of the state; later census records show many Lillards live in/around here in IL as well in neighoring MO counties, indicating that the Lillards may have "migrated" westerly from Sangamon Co..
One listing is for a Thomas Lillard (possibly a son) living in Jackson Co.,MO in 1840 (age unknown) (p.78), but his exact identity is unknown [2] but there have been no later findings of father Thomas after that 1840 listing.
Mormon church records confirm that 29 marriages were sealed, by a NC resident in 1975. These records are not available and therefor no supplemental information can be obtained therefrom. The summary page of these documents show a marriage for a Thomas and Tempey Duncan, as well as relatives thereof-- some are Lillards, one is a Elijah Duncan, who is presumed to be a sibling of Tempey/Temperance.
NOTE: Since these sealed marriages are not completely filed within the church, there may be errors therein. [1]
As aside information, the 1850 LDS AIS census synopsis lists some 25-30 Lillards in IL & MO, most of whom live within 100 miles of Sangamon County, IL--any of these could be related, in that they would be at least 20-25 years. old at that time and be born by or before 1825. One of these is a Thomas Lillard of Calhoun Co, IL (west central). Others lived in McDonough County, IL, and Clark/Lewis/Montgomery Counties, MO.
Because of the size of the Lillard "family descendants", the Lillard families have quite an extensive family history organization and are prominent in the VA and NC areas. The family name has spread across the country, originating with Thomas Lillard's grandfather.
As a matter of general interest, ref. (3) and (4) describe many important personages associated with the ancestors of Thomas Lillard, too numerous to list in entirety. Some of the better known ones are:
-Sir Thomas LOLLARD (Lillard), a knight of the British Army -the Scottish heroine Maiden Lilliard, who became infamous after a battle of 1544 in England -three Captains in Revolutionary War -many officers/enlisted men in: French & Indian War, Lord Dunmore's War, Spanish American/Mexican encounters, Civil War. -many judges and lawyers -Publisher of Druggist's journal -doctors -preachers -grist mill owners
Association by marriage/relationships of Lillard family members include:
-cousin to the Lee family, starting with Light Horse Harry Lee (who had a son named Robert E Lee) -related to Richard Henry Lee (mover of the Declaration of Independence) and Francis Lightfoot Lee (a signer of the Declaration of Independence). -Benjamin Lillard (the Younger- Abt. 1750) is reported to exchange conversations with President James Madison in terms of "Cousin James" and "Cousin Ben". -related to George Rogers Clark -related to President Thomas Jefferson -related to Marshall Field family (Chicago) -siring of Judge Silas Lillard Bryan (via a daughter of Capt Benjamin Lillard), who had a son named William Jennings Bryan.
The family relationships and accomplishments described in referenced books are impressive.
