Temperance Duncan
c1796- before 1833?

Temperance DUNCAN (born approximately in 1795), married Thomas Lillard on 6 Oct., 1814, in North Carolina, and became the great grandmother of Jennie Marquardt on the McKinney side of the family.

Attempts to learn more of this family ancestry, via census records, were not successful. No Duncan families are found in census records of 1600 on to 1906, so her family history is an unknown.

Specific researching was made in:

1810 Census-Richmond Cty, NC-No Duncans/Dunkins listed. [1]

1820 Census- Rockingham Cty, NC- There is a listing for a Christianson(?) Dunkin; the family consists of:
- one male under age 10,
- one male age 10-15, and
- a female age 46-65 (b 1755 to 1774).
- There were no slaves and
- there is no "wage earner" in the home.

This birth date might correlate with a grandmother of Temperance Duncan. More probably this family is not related, since there was another Dunkin family listed, with the male being about 30 years younger than the female of the Christianson Dunkin family. [1]

Mormon church records show that this marriage to Thomas Lillard was "sealed" [in 1975] by a church member, thereby confirming the marriage date as found in Rockingham County, NC Index to marriages.
This information was not entered into the Church's main computer records and there is no further family information, other than one of the many marriages sealed at this time was apparently for a brother Elijah Duncan who was married to a Ruthy Goffs on 29 Dec., 1820 in Rockingham County, NC.

Some records state that the marriage took place in Rockingham, Richmond Cty., NC; on the other hand, the 1820 census lists the Thomas Lillard family as residents of Rockingham County, NC. (with the city unspecified).

Thomas Lillard was listed in Census of 1820 at age 16-25 in Rockingham Co., NC, as having a son and a daughter (each under 10) and a wife born by 1795 (age 16-25). From this type record, we derive the birth year of Temperance.

Viewing the overall geography, Sangamon Co., IL is in central part of the state; later census records show many Lillards live in/around here in IL as well in neighboring MO counties, indicating that the Lillards may have "migrated" westerly from Sangamon Co..

Some records show that she died in Sangamon County, IL., date unknown, but nothing definitive is known. Her husband was married again in October, 1883 which would indicate that she had died by then
