Notes for Benjamin Lillard: Benjamin Lillard, Sr. c1701 - ?
Note: As might be reasonable to expect, confirmed genealogy for this family tends to be potentially contradictory in this 18th century period. Reference [1] is believed to be the most comprehensive and valid but much of Stout Lillard's information is not confirmable due to loss thereof. Later DAR type documentation exists but did not appear to be as correct nor consistent. Some of this information has been recorded in the event someone wishes to examine and pursue it further. Jacques Ephriam Stout Lillard's text is extremely comprehensive and consistent in information presented. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Benjamin Lillard (Sr)* is the only known son of John [Jean] Lillard and wife Mildred Jones Lillard of VA. He may have had brothers who died in infancy, and did sisters of whom there are no records.
By a second marriage of his father, there is a half sister named Sarah, of whom there also is no further information.
Benjamin met and married his wife Elizabeth Lightfoot, in Culpepper Co., VA. in 1724. She was the daughter of William Lightfoot and first cousin of Light Horse Harry Lee of Revolutionary War fame, who became the father of General Robert E. Lee. She was also related to the Lee family of VA, who were very active in US politics as well as in the state of VA..
They continued living in Culpepper County, VA where all their children, as well as many future Lillard children, were born. [reference [1] provides many of the successive generations of Lillards, who migrated south and west in following years.]
The children of this Benjamin-Elizabeth marriage, all born in Culpepper, VA, are recorded as: [special note is made for some of these children who had significant military experiences]
1. James (Sr.)** b. c1725-d. c1804; he was a Captain under "Light Horse" Harry Lee in the Revolutionary War. 2. Sgt. Thomas ** c1726 - ? 3. William 4. Nancy 5. MOSES [SR.] 1748 - c1813 -- our direct linage ancestor 6. Elizabeth 7. Sarah (Sally) 8. Capt John** b. 1737-d. 1801 9. unidentified son who married a Molly Field, producing many "important offspring" [and relatives; e g, Marshall Field, President T Jefferson, George Rogers Clark, etc. This note is somewhat confusing in that #5 child above, Moses, Sr. did marry an Ellander Molly Field; is there an error of names involved here or are Ellander and Molly Field two differenct persons?]. 10. Capt Benjamin**(Sr. or The Elder) b. c1739 - d. c1828 [one report states Capt Benjamin is the youngest known child in this family, contradicting information relating to child # 9 who was sometimes referred to as being "younger"]. 11. other children possible.
From ref [1], some of the issue of the above children are:
1. James I (Sr) married Abt. 1750, a Kesiah Bradley (? -d. c1804), who was a 2nd cousin of James Madison, the father of President Madison. It is believed that four of the listed sons [James, William, John and Tennessee Ben] all went to Eastern Tennessee together, and there are many descendants in that area from these families.
Their family consisted of:
a. James II(b ?- d.1811, in Smithland,KY) who married Jala Seal. Their children were: a1. Lewis Abt. 1802 in Cocke,Co., TN; was a boatman on various mid-western rivers. a2. Children issued are:

This is the reason for the "nickname" of Tennessee. He was a Lt. in a VA troop in the War of 1812-15, had two years of service, and was wounded four times.
