Includes NotesNotes for Nancy M. Lillard:

Nancy Lillard Pierce Mckinney

9 November, 1822 - 21 March, 1897

Nancy Lillard comes from a family about which much has been written and is displayed elsewhere herein. She is descended from a French immigrant, c1700.

She is the daughter of Thomas Lillard and Temperance Duncan Lillard, thereby being the great grandmother of Marie Vanda Wein.

The mother of Nancy, Temperance, died in IL [probably in Woodside Township, Sangamon County] while her father Thomas Lillard married again and moved to Missouri with all the children except Nancy and her sister Martha [2]. There were at least two boys in this family but no other information was found for them. [3]

Nancy was born in Rockingham, Richmond County, North Carolina but the family moved to Tennessee with Nancy's grandfather, and then later to Illinois about 1830. Little else is known about her, other than what the McKinney family did and in which she is thereby recorded.

Some ancestry beyond Nancy was found; they lived in the Rockingham County, NC area.

Ms. Lillard was reported to have been raised by a Negro housekeeper in Tennessee, in
accordance with an old family "story", but no further information on this was found.

Nancy Lillard's marriage date to Burell McKinney was 4 July, 1841 in Springfield, Sangamon County, IL. [The marriage certificate listed Nancy's prior name as "Nancy Pierce", indicating that there was a previous marriage or that she was listed by her middle given name.]

A Sangamon Co.,IL history confirms daughter Nancy [of the Lillards] was married to Burell McKinney and lived in WI.

From this marriage issued six children; more information on these children is shown under the information presented for Burell Mckinney:

-Martha McKinney
-George W. McKinney
-Sarah E. McKinney (1851-1933) who married William C. Vance in 1871, to produce Nancy
Jane Vance.
-Mary Frances McKinney
-Loretta [Rit] McKinney
-Nancy McKinney

Apparently all of these children were born in Illinois; records indicate that some of the children as well as mother Nancy died in the Floyd, IA area.

By 1876, they had moved to Wisconsin, but the year is unknown.

Nancy has not been found in any of the LDS AIS census listings.

She had been living with daughter Sarah and family at the time of her death in 1897. [4]

Nancy Lillard McKinney was buried in Niles Twp., Floyd County, Floyd, IA in 1897. [1]
