Burrell McKinney was the father of Sarah Elizabeth McKinney [1851-1933] who became the grandmother of Marie Lucille Vanda Wein. According to family records, Burrell was born in North Carolina 4 January, 1814. [2][8]
It is difficult to trace this family due to there being so many families with this surname living there; Census reports have this family name recorded in Burke, Iridell, Rutherford, and Surry Counties, all of which are very close to each other in the northwest part of North Carolina. All of these families might be related.
Some research found [1] [3] displays that this Burrell McKinney is the child of John McKinney and Temperance. He does not appear any Census Reports found in LDS records, for any state up to 1906 so it has been difficult to learn about him. Most of the information has been found per References 1-3.
Reference [3] indicates that Burrell was one of eleven children born of these parents John and Temperance McKinney. Although little is known about the parents of Burrell McKinney. Indications are that his parents were living in the same area of Sangamon Co., IL and also in Grant and Richland Co., WI [as Burrell was living]. [3] also indicates that father John was buried in WI.
Burrell traveled through Tennessee where the family lived in the 1820's and then to Sangamon Co., IL about 1829. [2]
It was in Springfield, Sangamon Co., IL that on 4 July 1841 he married Nancy LILLARD, the daughter of Thomas LILLARD and Temperance DUNCAN. [2] Temperance Duncan was also born in North Carolina and is believed to have been previously married.
There are 6 known children of Burrell and Nancy [8]. Birth dates for Martha and Loretta are not consistent within varying sources.
1] George McKINNEY b. 1845 m. Nancy A. CARPENTER 25 Mar 1875 in Richland Co., WI. [9] It is believed that he later moved to the Dakotas.
2]Sarah Elizabeth McKINNEY, b.12 August, 1851 in WI [9], m. William Clark VANCE 31 December, 1871 in Richwood, Richland Co., WI. He was a farmer. Sarah d. 2 December, 1933 and is buried in Oakwood Cemetery near the town of Floyd, Floyd Co. IA ** [7]
3] Mary Frances McKINNEY was b. 1 March, 1854 in WI [9] and died 27 May, 1929. She had three husbands: 8-2-1 a) Silas GARNER 1 October, 1869 in Richland County, WI.; b) Andrew Jackson VANCE [son of Jacob and Anna Vance] 13 November, 1872, in Richland County, WI.; [5] c) John NICHOLSON 24 October, 1881 in Richland County, WI. Mary Frances is buried in Soldiers Grove Cemetery, Crawford Co., WI
4] Loretta (Rit) McKINNEY was b. 31 December, 1857 in Springfield, IL. She m. William TONEY 17 July, 1877 in Scott, Crawford Co., WI. She died 19 January, 1927 in Waukon, Allamakee Co., IA * The birth year is not confirmed by [9].
5] Martha McKINNEY b. approximately. 1857-59 in WI [9] - little is known about Martha and some of this is confusing, in that: a] she is reported to have died at a young age, sometime after age 13, b] but is reported to have married a Jack Vance. This reference [9] displays one "Martha" and one "Martha A." McKinney, both born in 1857 which conflicts with the birth date of [4] above. [9]
6] Nancy Temperance [Temp] McKINNEY was b. 13 April 1863; m. David NICHOLSON (brother to Mary's last husband) 1 February, 1879 in Richland Co., WI. She died 1 December, 1938 and is buried in Beckwith Cemetery, Niles Twp., Floyd Co., IA. [4][8]
* Loretta does not appear in [9], under that given name, so birth date is unknown. On the other hand, in this Census, an unknown Lucretia appears to have the similar birth year as Loretta was expected to have, so they may be identical persons.
[**] Birth information for daughter Sarah states that she was born in Sangoman Cty., IL which appears to be contradictory with the above information, about residence of the family.
[Clifford Vance [10] believed that all or most of the McKinney children were born in IL, as his mother [Sarah] was a teenager when her parents moved to WI; the land purchase by Burrell in 1836 and the 1870 Census (9) would seem to contradict that belief.]
There may have been other children of Burrell and Nancy who also died young. Early census records seem to indicate another son born before 1850 and possibly a daughter named Ann. Reference [6] displays an Almira McKinney was born in WI and died at the age of 13 in April, 1860.
After their marriage, Burrell and Nancy moved north to Grant Cty., WI. Burrell purchased land in 1836. The description was: “Township 4 Range N 2 W E 1/2 of SE 1/4 Sec. 31 T 4 R 2, 80 acres @ $1.25, $100”. They lived in Grant, Richland Center, and Crawford Counties, WI during the next several years. He is listed as being a farmer in 1870. [9] 8-2-2
They were living in Clayton Twp, Crawford Cty. in 1880. [2]
"While most indications seem to suggest that Burrell is the son of John and Temperance McKinney, I still haven't found that one piece that truly convinces me." [1]
Burrell died sometime between 1880 and 1882. It is not known where he was buried but it is thought to be near Excelsior, Richland Co., WI. His wife, Nancy died in 1897 and is buried in Beckwith Cemetery, Niles Twp, Floyd Co., IA. [2]
