Sarah Elizabeth McKinney was the daughter of Burrell and Nancy Lillard McKinney. A great deal of family history is written about the Lillard family, dating back perhaps as far as the 16th century.
From information obtained, this family had its more recent roots in North Carolina but Sarah was born either in IL or WI.
Burrell McKINNEY, the father of Sarah Elizabeth, was born in North Carolina. He traveled through Tennessee where the family lived in the 1820's and then to Sangamon Co., IL where on 4 Jul 1841 he married Nancy LILLARD. Sometime after their marriage, Burrell and Nancy moved north to Grant Co., WI. where Burrell purchased land in 1836.
Recollections of Clifford Vance, Sarah and family moved to WI when she was a teenager. Seeming to substantiate this, the land purchase records quoted above indicate father Burrell McKinney bought land in WI in 1836 and that Sarah would therefor appear to have been born in WI, not Sangamon Cty., Illinois
Sara McKinney's mother, Nancy Lillard, was born in Rockingham, Richmond County, NC, died in 1897 and is buried in Niles Twp., Floyd Cty at Beckwith Cemetery, Floyd, IA.. [1]
Sarah was a homemaker, and was married to William Clark Vance on 31 December, 1871 in Richwood, Richland, WI.. From this marriage was born nine children, the oldest of whom was Nancy Jane Vance. The other children from this marriage are listed in information presented for spouse William Vance.
