About Our Family Research

My Father, Christian Arthur Wellesley, the 4th Earl Cowley, arrived in Nevada in 1933. He was a direct descendant of the Duke of Wellington, Arthur Wellesley, who defeated Napoleon at Waterloo in 1815. Christian became a famous actor in New York and London. He married Mary Elsie May, in 1933, and built an estate and ranch in Washoe Valley, Nevada, later purchased by Frank List, whose son later became Governor of Nevada. Mary Elsie’s grandfather was George De Remer, successful farmer and pioneer in the Truckee Meadows, Nevada, prior to the establishment of Reno in 1861. Family members in Reno include Menke, Longfield and May.
