My Grandfather Peter Harvey Wellins was born in Middleton Manchester England about 1874 he married Elizabeth May Bell born in Ireland 1867( Father William Bell - Police Constable) possibly born in Moire, County Down. They were married in Toxteth Park on 19/2/1901 in a civil ceremony. My father Thomas Andrew was born in Toxteth Park on 24/7/1902, Peter Harvey Jr was born in 1904 and Timothy vincent in 1906. Timothy died in the Sept Quarter of 1906 and Elizabeth died soon after. Peter senior left his two remaining boys in the care of their Aunt? and joined the Army. He had an allotment sent to the Aunt to assist in the raising of his sons. After several years away he returned to find she had placed his boys in a Christian brothers Orphanage. The Church in its wisdom would not release the boys into his care as he was an unmarried man and so they remained in the Orphanage until Tom was 12 years old and able to go to work. At that time their Father Harvey was living in an hotel with the proprietess Mrs Mary Ann Porter nee Casewell a widow whom he married on 29/6/1918 after he returned from service in the war in 1917 having sustained an injury which resulted in his early discharge.A business is gazetted as belonging to Mary & Harvey wellins in 1938 being a Pub at 52 Crumpsall Rd Crumpsall, Lancashire, England. We do not know if this was the Pub owned by Mary at the time when the boys returned to live with their father. Tom and Peter worked in the local cotton mills, Tom on the mill floor and Peter Jr because he had been good at his lessons was taken on at age 10 as apprentice to the accountant.
