Howdeshell Family Research Project

Updated June 30, 2004

About Our Family Research

I am researching the family of Jacob HOWDESHELL, born 1 Jun 1736 in Langensoultzbach, Northern Alsace, (now part of France). Jacob was the son of Hans Michael HAUDENSCHILD and Anna Margaretha RUCH.

Hans Michael HAUDENSCHILD and family came over on the ship "Dragon", 17 October 1749 from Hamburg, Germany to Philadelphia, PA.

It is uncertain how long the family remained in the area of PA upon arrival to the "New World". Approximately 20 years after their arrival, the HAUDENSCHILD / HOWDESHELL family has been located in New Jersey c1765.

Jacob HOWDESHELL married Elizabeth HAMBLER and their first three children are said to have been born in NJ during the years c1766-1769. Elizabeth HAMBLER was the daughter of John and Catherine HAMBLER who were of Morris County, NJ.

Jacob and Elizabeth HOWDESHELL (along with their families) came from New Jersey and settled in Loudoun County, VA as early as 1769. They remained in Loudoun County VA until c1781 . In 1782 Jacob is located on a Tax List of Bedford County, VA (a typical migration path).

It is found that Jacob paid taxes in Kentucky as early as June 1787. In the 1792 an area of Virginia was divided off from the state of Virginia which became the state of Kentucky. The family resided in the area when the transition from one state to another took place.

Jacob HOWDESHELL died in Barren County, KY in the year 1813 as his will was probated 19 Jul 1813 (Name on record: Jacob Howdershelt). The HOWDESHELL family removed to Lincoln County, MO c1809.
