Glendale --- Word came here Monday that Lawrence Town of Beverly, who was seriously burned Sunday morning building the fire, using kerosene, died Sunday night. Lawrence was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Town, and a grandson of the late Mrs. Wormser, and lived in this neighborhood many years. He married Miss Butterworth less than a year ago. It is so sad.

FORMER OTTAWA CO. MAN BURNED TO DEATH
Lawrence Towne, Business Man of Beverly, Burned While Building Fire
Lawrence Towne, one of the younger business men of Beverly, who was raised in the Ada community and well known in Ottawa Co., was burned to death last Sunday, upon trying to start a fire at his home by the aid of gasoline or alcohol.
Mr. Towne got up at seven o'clock Sunday morning and built the fire at his home, then went back to bed for another short nap while the house warmed up. At about 7:30 he got up again and investigation showed that the fire was not burning. He took a can containing either gasoline or denatured alcohol and attempted to use it to hurry the fire. No one else was in the room, so it is not known exactly what happened, but it is probable that the highly volatile fuel was thrown into the stove and immediately flamed out onto him.
His night clothing, made of flanellette cloth, caught fire and he attempted to put out the blaze by himself without calling to his wife, still in bed in another room. The night clothing was all burned from his body before he succeeded in extinguishing the blaze, and he was horribly burned all over, except for a small part of his back and one leg.
By the time the fire was finally extinguished by rolling himself in a rug, only a small piece of the night clothing -- about the size of one's hand, was left. He was so badly burned that parts of his flesh dropped from the body. Two physicians and a nurse were rushed from Salina, besides the local physician, but they were unable to save him. After suffering throughout the day, he finally succumbed at 7:10 in the evening.
Mr. Towne was a member of the firm of Meili and Towne. They had been operating a garage at Beverly for about three years. The deceased was married only last May and leaves a heart-broken widow to sorrow over his untimely passing. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Towne who have been living at Beverly since about 1911, moving there from Ada.
Lawrence Howard Towne was born at Ada, Kansas, December 19, 1890. He was married to Miss Ruth Buttermore of Beverly May 26, 1924. He leaves to mourn his loss his wife, father, mother, three brothers, and three sisters, Claude, of Chicago, Illinois; Jay, of Newberg, Oregon; Eugene, now at home; Mrs. Grace Beichley, of Ada; Mrs. Alta Pierce, of Tescott; and Clara, now at home.
He served in the World War in the Motor Transportation Corps No. 498, with which he went overseas.
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon from the Beverly City Hall, in order to accommodate more of the citizens who were present to pay their respects to the memory of the deceased. Rev. Wilson, of the Baptist Church, of which organization the deceased was a member, officiated, assisted by Rev. Fish, of the M.E. Church.
The American Legion had charge of the funeral and buried their comrade with full military honors. The Odd Fellows attended in a body. All the business houses and schools were closed to pay their respects to so prominent a citizen. It was the largest funeral ever held in Beverly.
All the brothers and sisters were back for the funeral, with the exception of Jay, who lives in Oregon.
