I have accumulated the family information from family members. Most of my parents families on both sides are pioneers who settled in the Kanawha Valley of West Virginia. The spirit of determination opened the West for those who came after them. One cannot read history but think of the Morris and Young family in our area. The Derrick family settled in another area of the Kanawha Valley around the same time, notably the Sissonville Area and Derrick's Creek carries the family name. After starting into the Family history I have found more than a dozen men in my family who fought in the Battle of Point Pleasant and many, many who were in the Civil War. Had it not been for chance, I would not have found out about the great heritage my family has given me. Charleston, WV and the surrounding area may not have been settled for many years later had it not been for their courage and determination. I am proud of each one of them.
