Includes NotesNotes for Thomas Franklin Williams:
Thomas Franklin Williams was born in a cabin about 10 miles west of Asheville NC.
He moved from NC before 1877 to Greenville SC. There are questions as to why, that have not been answered.
Sometime around the turn of the century or shortly before he at his own admission operated 17 illegal
whisky stills in an area known as Dark Corner plus one bonded for the state of SC. He was pardoned by Governor Ellerbee after he informed the governor he was given up the liquor trade and his $4700 in bond money was returned to him.
He then went worked at American Spinning Co. for one year then worked at Poinsett textile mill for twenty seven years. He was a master mechanic by trade having put together the first steam operated cotton gin in this area. He was quit proud that he had held a full time job when he was 79 years old.
He could not read nor write.
He was short in stature about 5ft- 8in tall and quick tempered.
He had confrontations with two different trial lawyers in two different trials. One he hit with his fist in the face and the other he hit with a chair. Lt. Governor Mauldin stood before the court in one case on his behalf and the judge returned his contempt fine. In both case the judges said his actions were justified.
He said he never took a life although he did disarm a revenue agent one time and sent him safely on his way home.
