Francis settled in Boston and then in 1802 removed to Turner, Maine, where he was known as Capt. Cushing. Military: Revolutionary War. Francis was an Ensign in Capt. Joseph Stetson's Co., Col. Anthony Thomas' regt., 24 March, 1776; and Captain, 3rd Scituate Co., Col. John Cushing's 2nd Plymouth Co. regt., from 8 May 1776 until 5 March, 1778. He was one of the builders of the U.S. Frigate -Constitution-. Cushing, Francis. Ensign, Capt. Joseph Stetson's co., Col. Anthony Thomas's regt.; service, 5 days; company marched from Scituate to Hingham March 24, 1776, on an alarm at the taking of Dorchester Heights; also, Captain, 3d Scituate co., 2d Plymouth co. regt.; list of officers of Mass. militia, as returned by John Cushing, Jr., and others, dated Hanover, May 8, 1776; ordered in Council May 10, 1776, that commissions be issued; reported commissioned May 10, 1776; also, Captain, Col. John Cushing's (2d Plymouth Co.) regt.; service, 15 days; company ordered to march to Bristol, R. I., on an alarm in Dec., 1776; also, return dated Scituate, March 7, 1778, signed by John Cushing,Jr., Colonel of 2d Plymouth Co. regt., stating that agreeable to resolve of Feb. 24, 1778, he had detached men sufficient to form two companies of 50 men each, exclusive of commissioned officers, from said regiment, and that said companies marched into camp at Hull March 5, 1778; said Cushing reported as Captain of 1st company.
