A Warm Welcome to All Tothills.
Nearly all Tothills, Toothills, Totells, Tuttells, and very many similarly named, come from Devon in UK, and the name appears to originate from the Egyptian 'Tut'(a teacher)
The family would have first set foot in UK before the birth of Christ and there are evidences of this in Celtic relics and other objects. It seeems to have been well established in the UK before the Norman Conquest (1066 AD), and fairly rapidly having made their way to the West Country (Devon specifically).
So far we have records of Tothills going back as far as 1552 when William Tothill (married to Elizabeth Matthew)was Mayor of Exeter in Devon, England, and our records lead up until the present date of July 2005. But of course there are a few gaps, and even with the records available it is very hard to fill in all the details that we would wish.
The major gap is from about 1630 until 1723. We have records of William Drake (son of Joan Tothill who was married to Francis Drake), until Robert Tothill of Exeter who we have records of having died in 1723.
Any additions will be very gratefully received and will be treated as confidential if so wished.
Look forward to hearing from you
