"History of Allegan and Barry Counties" 1880

The 23rd settlement in Allegan Co. MI was Salem. It was setlled by Michael Straher and Joh n Teed in 1851, and by William Goodman and Charles Strickfaden and his 2 sons in 1852. the t wp was organized in 1855
William Goodman, who left the cultivated frields of Ohio for a home in the forests of Michiga n, chose 80 acres on section 17, and like Mr. Strickfaden, accepted the hospitality of Mr. St raher, who assisted him in the raising of his log dwelling. Many neighbors from the adjoinin g township of Monterey also volunteered their services on this occasion. Not atree had, at t his datebeen cut, on the north of the Rabbit River, and the obcxure tail of the few remaini g Indians, who occasionally traversed their old hunting grounds, was the only guide to the tr aveller.
Mr. Goodman has continued since his settlement a resident of the farm he purchased. He is no w in his 84th year, and had recently taken up abode with his daughter, Mrs. Joseph Slagel. Tw o sons also reside in the township.

1857: Director of the poor
Emigrated in 1830 to Franklin Co PA, rented farm for 2 years near Waynesboro.
1838: Resided in Richland Co., OH[Wisniewski 2.FTW]
