Henry Bale (originally Heinrich Behl) was the pioneer settler in what is now the village of L afayette, Sussex Co. He is said to have located there as early as 1750; built the first gris t-mill, and dam in the vicinity. He was a man of great enterprise; erected a blacksmith sho p and is said to have been one of the most prominent men of his day in that part of the count ry; on Alexandria Church records 1772; m. Elisabeth; had bro. Peter.

JOhann Heindrich Behl (Henry Bale) was born around 1730 in the Black Forest section of German y. It is supposed that he came from Germany via Alsace-Lorraaine through Brest, leaving Rott erdam on the ship Forest landing in Phladelphia, PA on 11 October 1752. He was the first se ttler of the New Jersey village of Lafayette, building the first flouring mill and the firs t dam in the area, erecting his business on the Paulinskill River.

Henry died in 1783 and is buried in a small cemetery in Ross's Corner Township, NJ.[Wisniewski 2.FTW]
