The Easterwood Family of Indiana and Boone County Kentucky

Updated September 12, 2009

About Our Family Research

Eli Easterwood was a resident of Ohio County and Martin County, Indiana and in the 1860 census, Boone County, Kentucky.

He married Mary Ann Trader June 21, 1854 with a marriage license issued in Boone County Kentucky. Isaac Trader, brother of the bride, was the sponsor. Consent for the marriage was given by the bride's father, John Trader of Hartford, Ohio County, Indiana, which is just across the Ohio River from Boone County. Mary Ann was the daughter of John Trader and Elizabeth Johnson. Elizabeth and Mary Ann were born in Indiana, in ~1813 and ~1834, respectively. John and Elizabeth Trader were issued a marriage license in Dearborn County, Indiana in 1831. They lived in or near Hartford and Rising Sun, Indiana for over thirty years. John Trader is reported as being born in Ohio and Kentucky on the 1850 and 1860 census, respectively. John Trader's father's name was John Trader, also. He had a brother named Arthur. Don't know what happend to the elder John, but his sons were indentured to Isaac Carlton and James Porter, respectively.

Eli and Mary Ann had three children, two children born in Ohio County, Indiana, Isabel (1855) & John (1856) survived to adulthood. A third known child, William E., was born in Kentucky in 1860 (on that census) and died before the age of 5 as he was not in the widow's pension application.

The family was listed in the 1860 census in Petersburg District of Boone County Kentucky. They are listed on the same census page with Mary Ann's siblings: Isaac Trader and Elizabeth Dean (husband Abial Dean / Abiel Dean) and their families. They all worked as farm hands and laborers there.

According to his service record, in January of 1863, Eli moved to Martin County, Indiana. He was a cooper there, possibly working for a relative who owned a "hoop and stave" business and a cooperage or for the Union Army. He was a resident there for about a year when he enlisted in the Union Army.

According to his military record, Eli was 32 years old, born in the state of Ohio (in 1831 or 1832) and a resident of Halberts Township, Martin County, Indiana in February of 1864 when he enlisted in the 91st Indiana Regiment, Co I. He was killed in action in the Civil War near Kennesaw Mountain near Marietta, Georgia on June 15, 1864 during the Battle of Gilgal Church.

Mary Ann Easterwood and her children, Isabel and John, were listed in the 1870 Ohio County, Indiana census as living in Rising Sun next to her sister, Rachel York, and her mother, Mary Elizabeth Trader. Rachel York was the widow of Amos Main York, Jr. Her children, Amos Marion York and Mary Elizabeth York were living with her in 1870. George Trader and Marcus Trader were living with their mother, Mary Elizabeth Trader in that census also.

The Easterwood children later migrated to Ripley and Tipton counties in Indiana. Isabel also went by the name Annabelle. Isabel Easterwood married Frank Hickner. John Easterwood married Magdalena Hickner. Frank and Magdalena were brother and sister, children of Joseph Hickner (veteran of 49th Indiana) and Mary Elizabeth Fischer.

Although we found Easterwoods listed in OH, PA, and NY census, we have been unable to establish kinship with any of those families. I have not been able to locate Eli in the 1850 census. The earliest record I have found on Eli Easterwood is a tax record of 1852 in Boone County, Kentucky. Later tax records place him in Ohio County, Indiana.

No major breakthroughs on these Brick Walls since the 1980s in spite of the growth of the internet and travel to Indiana and Boone County to search libraries and museums:

John Trader, Elizabeth Johnson, Eli Easterwood.
