First we would like to thank everyone for their support during this difficult time. The people who made it all just a little easier and made mom feel a little better during her last days with us. We want to thank Auntie Doris and Auntie Louise for all the extras they have contributed, and for Auntie Louise playing for us today, and Greg for amazingly “whipping up” a slide show tribute to mom in record time.

Pastor Ernest has also been very supportive and we thank him for that. And everyone who traveled the distance to make it here we thank you. Not to forget our thank you’s to Sue and John from Mourning Glory Funeral Home.

Today we are joining in the celebration of the life of a wife, our mom, grandma, sister and auntie Anne. She was always so full of life and she would want to be remembered that way. A few tears and lots of laughter. “Suck it up” as she would have said, and dad was a witness to that.

On July 13th or July 17th, 1944, depending on the year you met her, Granny Annie also known as Mother Harper to some was born to Michael and Lena Filewich in a farmhouse near Roblin, Manitoba. It was there that she grew up with her 3 brothers Steve, Mike, and Julian, 2 sisters Lena and Stella and for a brief time her sister Mary whom passed away as an infant.

She attended school in Roblin until grade 11, moved to Kilarny, Manitoba where she worked in a hospital as a candy striper. From here she moved to start the big city life in Edmonton, but not without buying her first car with her best friend Jean. They were excited to have wheels to “bomb around in”. Of course always managing to find a little excitement along the way.

In Edmonton was where she would meet her future husband, our dad, Dave. It was an easy choice for mom because it was love at first sight…. For his car!!!!

Our parents were married in Edmonton at our dad’s parents home, on May 14, 1966. A year later they were blessed with their first son, Lance. 18 years later mom would go to the doctor for a broken toe for playing a game of “last touch”, trying to kick Lance she kicked the coffee table instead. She really didn’t play that game much after that…She finally won the game with her last touch.

A year later, Darcy was born; to be wild and would always hold a special place in mom’s heart. He later expressed an interest in law enforcement.

With baby making becoming quite the fad, a year later, their first daughter Carla was born. Mom would later come to enjoy the fact that there were people shorter than her and she was proud of it.

After 6 1/2 years of boredom, they would be blessed a fourth time with their second daughter Tanya. This is where they would stop because we are all sure she came out talking and has just never stopped, and mom did enjoy a quiet moment once in awhile.

With all of her kids she managed to inherit some pretty great people. Greg, a son in law that she quickly nicknamed the Mazola kid and with that she gained two extended daughters, Val and Maureen, a daughter in law Heather that she took pleasure in being part of her first intoxicating moment enjoyed at our home, another son in law Ashley who is well known for his cooking and being the family water boy. She also became a grandma to 9 grandchildren and loved them with all her heart. There was nothing more important to her than “her kids and grand kids”.

Mom had many jobs in her life time from waitress, hospital housekeeping, highway driver and not to mention a creative joke teller in her own awkward Ukrainian way.
Her favorite and most gratifying occupation and the one we all cherished most came from being a wife, a mom, and a grandma. Always accepting and forgiving of the oops we have made as children and adults. An unconditional mother’s love, no questions asked. And we know right now she is still continuing her career in these departments as she looks down us, guiding and protecting us. She did tell us she would try to get us those lottery numbers so we’ll have to keep you posted.

Mom was the best cook ever. I am sure most of you have experienced her cooking at some point which may be another reason why you are here in hopes that we may pass on some of her great recipes. Unfortunately, when she would “whip something up” she would make a ten course meal out of five ingredients and still would only be able to say I just used a pinch of this or a pinch of that.

A surprise visit from friends or families, sleep overs with Tanya’s friends. Mom always made sure her home was your home and you left with probably 10 extra pounds under your belt. Her meal times were always her favorite times. She loved to cook and loved to entertain, go big or go home, but first with a full belly.

Not only did she love to cook, but she also loved to have fun with the food. Mom had no problem letting a nice pancake breakfast turn into a pancake hurricane. Food fights were a big part of some of our mornings with her and she joined in with the rest of us. The only catch we had to help clean up. We really did love her pancakes.

Mom always had a huge fear of water. This never stopped her from planning the best lake trips we all enjoyed growing up. She was witness to some crazy events: Dad fishing from the back of the boat on the motor while driving at warp speeding his shorts and cowboy boots, Darcy flying head first into the bushes while water skiing because dad had brought him in too close to shore, or myself stepping on glass in the lake and almost losing my toe, or Tanya’s bee sting when Dr. Mom’s instant remedy was to pull out a cold allan- wrench from the cooler. And Lance much like mom did not enjoy the water, but did take the opportunity to drive the boat to chase birds and cut donuts on the water. Things haven’t changed, just last week he was cutting donuts with his semi on frozen water.

Mom always made a trip to remember and enjoy for life.

When grandchildren came along this was the highlight of her life. She was now able to enjoy children as always. But now never had to worry about spoiling them because she could now just give them back.

Grandma was just as special to her grand kids. There wasn't’t a time spent where they weren’t doing a craft, baking, playing games or soaking the bathroom and grandma while she bathed them when she had them for sleep overs.

The kids loved grandma as much as she loved them. When we asked the kids about grandma Kurt said, She’s a kind sweet little lady. Paige was worried if Baby Jesus had a bed for grandma to sleep in, Mitchell said she always gave cool gifts and could have little people conversations, Sam said she spoiled me because I was the only girl for along time and I was the best, and Dylan said she always got us nice things and little treats.
Kids call it like they see it and mom loved that.

Mom was a believer in wishes. She would wish the best to everyone she met.
A wish for good health
A wish for happiness and good fortune.
A wish for family
A wish for friendship
And a wish for true love.
We wish her all this and eternal peace.

Thank you again and we love you mom. So in Kaitlyn’s words mom would have now liked us to say “Bye bye, see ya, Shut the door” !!!
