My research started several years ago when I was young and in High School and I took an interest in several old photographs that my grandfather had. I wanted to know more about these people and where they came from. I had several of their names but I wanted to find out how we were related. I spent two summers in Minnesota after moving to Arkansas photographing headstones in the area cemeteries. This even included a trip into Iowa to a small church cemetery. Along the way I even helped restore and clean some of the headstones.
Secondly, I started the research to find out if my family of Kohlmeyers were somehow connected with another family of Kohlmeiers. *Note the difference in spelling.* I still feel we are somehow related as I have a picture of a wedding in Plattmouth, Nebraska, which is where part of their family is from.
To date I know my family originated from Velgen, Germany which was in Hanover Proving. My great grandfather, Wilhelm Kohlmeyer immagrated in 1857 to the United States. I do not know which port he came through. His wife's family immagrated before this time. His wife's name was Catharine Louise Marie Schultze. She was know by the name Caroline.
His parents were Johann Heinrich Kohlmeyer and Katherine Margaretha Dorthea Kruse. They are buried in a small cemetery in New Albin, Iowa.
