The John L Wilhites of Oneida, TN Updated January 6, 2002
About Our Family Research
Every year, second weekend in June, the family of John L Wilhite and Leona Slaven Wilhite travel to Oneida TN for a reunion picnic and to decorate the graves of ancestors in the Wilhite Cemetery on Buffalo Creek and the church cemetery at Pine Hill Baptist Church. We have been doing this since the early 50's, when the trip from Cincinnati was a two lane highway and we would start out at 4 in the morning. As a young adult I puzzled over the fact there was only one Wilhite family in the Scott County area, Uncle Howard Wilhite and so my research in genealogy initially started out to solve this mystery. Where had all the Wilhites gone? I started out by first talking with Great Aunt Nannie who layed out the tree of who my Wilhite ancestors were, then I went looking for documentation to prove her right. Turns out she was right about everything except for switching the first names of her two grandmothers. John and Leona Wilhite had 8 children who gave them 26 grandchildren, and a slew of greatgrandchildren. So where did all the Wilhites go? Turns out they had mostly daughters who changed their names when they married.
