McGill/ Wyhoon Family Tree

Updated July 21, 2003

About Our Family Research

On my descendants, Alexander and brother John McAllister McGill,Migrated from the Isle of Wight England,to Australia. Both in the marine industry e.g. shipbuilding, as were there descendants, father Alexander McAllister McGill born Scotland and his father Richard McGill.Other family in England were Janet McAllister McGill who married William Gregory in Isle of Wight, and John McAllister McGill Snr(uncle of our John McAllister in Australia) who was a Navel Architect, and Married in Cornwall.
Also many not yet traced Peter/Mary Johnston McGill/Agnes/
another Janet McAllister/Robert and Helen to name but a few. Alexander Jnr married Ellen McCLelland in Kynton Victoria in 1861,and finally resided near Tatura in Victoria and John married Isobella Baillie in Newport England 1917 and finally resided in Queensland.
Family folk lore is that Alexander Snr owned a ship yard in the Isle of Wight, which either went broke or was compulsary acquired during the war by the Navy. Proof of this I am yet to find, but once I know where to look for these records may eventually solve this mystery. The other mystery to be solved is the name Johnston, this was by family inheritance passed down to the women in the McGill family as McAllister was to the men.

Wyhoon is a given name for my husbands chinese descendants.
Ah Hoon/Tong/we have traced to Canton China. As was ussual with many chinese immigrants, they either chose a western name, or there name was mispelt by the English speaking countries. This makes it very hard to trace ancestors.
Many were marketgardners, and miners, who joined the gold rush in Victoria.William Ah Hoon(who became William Wyhoon) married Mary Cook in Ararat, Victoria in 1854. Her father Thomas Cook, was in fact originally Thomas Tong/Onthon/Onthong/Onton before changing his name to Cook. Her mother was Bridget(nee Fogarty)
Many of the Wyhoons lived in the Avoca area of Victoria.
