The YAZZIE Family - Navajo Reservation of Arizona

Updated January 22, 2001

About Our Family Research

The Yazzie family is a marriage of many cultures and ethnic groups. The name Yazzie originates from the Navajo language as a description about the size or age of someone. The Yazzie family lives on the Navajo Reservation in northeastern Arizona.
The history of the Yazzie/Wilson side of the family is the history of the Navajo people. These were the men and women who were nomadic hunters and gatherers before the 'white man' came to the high deserts. Here too are the warriors who fought the neighboring Indian tribes, performing feats of bravery, rescuing kidnapped women and children. After the arrival of the Spanish, they are the sheepherders and weavers and silversmiths of the trading post fame. They are also the defeated people forced to leave their homes for Fort Sumner. And they are the men and women who lived in an area blessed to become a Mission of the Fransican Order and to be the place that Saint Katherine Drexel chose to build St. Michael Indian School. Today the Yazzie family is active in the Mission Church and St. Michael Indian School.
The Yazzie/Wilson research is limited to documents available through the St. Michael Mission Church and through the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
The Briggs/Hotaling side of the family is a history of the United States. With origins on the Hotaling side stretching back to the days of New Amsterdam and early settlements of the Virginia colony, the family can follow the historical developments of the US through the involvement of their own family movements. The westward migration of these families mirrors the migration patterns in US history. Members on both sides of the family fought in the many wars that have befallen our country. They have also played an active role in the establishment of governments throughout history.
The Briggs side of the family includes the surnames of Briggs, Jones, Scheetz, Wise, Graham, Prinz or Prince, and the states of Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, Indiana, New York.
The Hotaling side includes the surnames of Hotaling (and all its numerous spellings), Chadd, Rosenbaum, Guilliams, Crothers, Garrett, Brandt, Van Slyke, Fox, Starr and the states of Colorado, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Iowa, Illinios, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia, Pennsylvianna, New York.
