My family came to the Rhondda Valley between 1872 and 1890 they came from farming areas in Somerset,Glousester,Montgomeryshire and Monmouth. The reason being work, farming labourers were poorly paid and families were suffering. The mining industry was in its infancy and needed workers,as in the gold rush of Alaska the people flocked to the Rhondda Valley in their thousands. My great-great grandfathers and their wives and children were among this influx of people. Although from different parts of the country they all settled in the parish of Ystradyfodwg. Over the first few years of settling here the families became united when their children grew up and married.Eighteen months ago i began to research my families history i am now hooked and spend many happy hours checking cencus records, electorial registers, etc.My late relatives have now become real people and are no longer just names from the past.
